United, we can win the jobs we deserve
Warehouse jobs used to be good jobs. Workers at Sears Roebuck, Montgomery Ward, Spiegel and many others waged years of struggle for decent wages and working conditions. Because of the efforts of organized working women and men, these jobs paid enough to support a family. A large number of these warehouse jobs were unionized, and offered decent benefits and pensions.
But as supply chains became global these jobs changed drastically. Retailers like Walmart, Home Depot and others sought to "squeeze cost" from their supply chains, seeking new ways to reduce wages and benefits. Good, permanent jobs became low-wage temp jobs. Schedules became unpredictable. Benefits like paid leave became non-existent. Discrimination and safety violations soared.
WWJ believes that the key to changing this is building a strong organization of warehouse workers. When we deal with employers as individuals, we have very little power. But united, we can hold retailers accountable for conditions and win the living wage, permanent jobs we deserve. Like the warehouse workers of the last century we can come together and transform this industry.
WWJ trains workers on their legal right to come together in the workplace and fight to make things better. We teach workers how to organize to win improvements such as raises, paid sick days and holidays, better safety conditions and a voice at the workplace.
